Gastroenteritis

Posted: November 10, 2017

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health, this week drew the attention of the public and management of schools and institutions to the prevention of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), due to increased activity in HK. AGE is commonly caused by a norovirus and rotavirus, and is a frequent cause of outbreaks in schools, which may occur throughout the year but are known to occur more frequently in winter.

Symptoms include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • abdominal pain
  • fever
  • malaise

If your child has any of these symptoms we would please ask you to keep them at home until they are feeling better and are symptom free. Any student with a fever of 37.5 ÂșC or above should be kept at home. The recommendations from the Health Department is to be kept at home for an additional 48 hours after their fever and symptoms have subsided, without the assistance of fever reducing medication. If you have any questions please contact the medical room.
