Reading over the Holidays

Posted: April 3, 2020

The upcoming holidays provide the ideal opportunity to sit back, relax and read a good book. The positive impact of reading on health and wellbeing is well documented and we especially encourage adults and children to read together. Reading with your child leads to positive associations with books, helps to establish a lifetime love of reading, improves children’s vocabulary, grammar and communication skills, encourages creativity and imagination and is overall a very enjoyable pursuit.

At Discovery College Library, we would like to draw your attention to some of the new reading material we have available online via the Ding! Library page. A number of educational providers are sharing further content for free during this time of school campus closure and the Ding! Library page is being updated regularly as more of these resources become available. As the online libraries have a varied selection of materials for all ages, in Primary we ask that parents help to choose the most appropriate year level before reading and supervise reading choices closely.

Primary

  • Scholastic has offered Bookflix, Trueflix and Scienceflix. These materials in particular are well produced. These are organised by category and as paired up fiction and nonfiction books. Many are presented as engaging animated videos.
  • Time4Kids has offered all 2020 magazine issues online.
  • Audible has opened up a selection of audiobooks to listen to across 6 different languages.
  • Capstone Interactive has a large selection of interactive ebooks to choose from.

If you have any queries in relation to any of these resources, please contact our PYP Teacher Librarian, Leanne Sercombe by email at leanne.sercombe@dc.edu.hk

Secondary
Our secondary databases and online subscriptions, which include access to many books, journals and magazines, can also be accessed via our Ding! Library page. If you have any queries in relation to any of these resources, please contact our Head of Library, Maura Corcoran by email at corcom1@dc.edu.hk

As our online resources are being well used and due to unprecedented demand across the world, some are experiencing surges of activity which may result in unplanned downtime. Others are scheduling maintenance to upgrade servers, e.g., Big Universe. If any are unavailable when you access, please try again at a later time.
