In Year 10 Science, students performed a full dissection of a pig’s heart, which is anatomically similar to a human heart. The goal was to properly identify all chambers, valves, and blood vessels of the heart and to understand how these parts work together to form the human circulatory system. Students enjoyed the tactile experience and gained a new respect for this vital organ. The dissection skills learned will help prepare students for diploma biology (in Years 12 and 13) and for university level biology courses, should a student wish to pursue a future career in medicine or surgery.
