Show your appreciation – “A Thankful Heart”– is the theme of this year’s DC Lunar New Year Fun Fair, which takes place next Friday 13 February. Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival) is the most important of the traditional Asian holidays.
There are so many interesting traditions and customs to discover about the joyful festivals, held across much of Asia, which begin on the first day of a new moon and end with the full moon on the day of the Lantern Festival.
This year’s Discovery College Lunar New Year Fun Fair gives students, staff and the community an opportunity to engage in elements of Asian culture. Students will participate in activities ranging from learning the tradition of Lai See to chopstick challenges, and participation is key to receiving a stamp in the students’ activity passports. Parents are welcome to attend.
We encourage students to come along in clothes to celebrate the occasion. This could include traditional attire, red clothing, and/or new clothing, as is the Chinese tradition.
