Year 2 – How the world works

Posted: February 6, 2015

The Y2 students have been continuing to think scientifically about forces. This week guest speakers demonstrated forces at work in the air and water. Paul Aubert visited our classrooms to explain the forces connected with flight. His presentation helped students understand how gravity and air pressure can be overcome to create lift and how an aircraft’s shape reduces air resistance. The force of buoyancy was demonstrated in the DC swimming pool. Matt Davis, explained how buoyancy, friction and water resistance work when surfing. Jamie Coote demonstrated how scuba diving equipment operates and how to create ‘neutral buoyancy’. The level of interest amongst students was high and prompted many questions to explore further.
