It looks like summer is just around the corner! A friendly reminder that if you and your children are going to spend time out in the sun always be sure to slip, slop, slap, and sip:
- Slip on protective wear. Protect exposed skin from UV rays by covering up with lightweight clothing.
- Slap on a hat and shades. Wear a hat with a wide brim and UVA/UVB protecting sunglasses in the bright sun.
- Slop on some sunscreen. Always wear SPF 15 or higher sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before you go out in the sun. Re-apply at least every 2 hours especially if you are swimming or sweating a lot.
- Sip on water. Drink plenty of water as it is easy to become dehydrated in hot humid weather. Water is also an important part of staying healthy so encourage your children to drink frequently not just when they are thirsty. Make sure they keep their water bottles filled and present with them at all times. Please discourage the consumption of distilled water in summer as it can wash essential minerals from the body that are already at risk of being lost through sweating and exertion.
It is a requirement for all primary students to wear a sun hat in order to play in the uncovered areas of the schoolyard and to participate in outdoor physical education. If your child has misplaced his/her hat please come look in the lost and found or visit the PTA shop for a replacement.
At the same time with our inclement summer weather, please ensure your child brings an umbrella or raincoat to school with them every day.
