Last week, as part of the Parent Information Fair, a round table session with parents was held on Social Media. Parents shared what they perceived as the positives with social media along with their tensions and risks around its use by their children and teenagers.
Parents shared positive stories including family sharing across continents, stimulating debate, broadening knowledge and school project/homework collaboration. Tensions included the potential shallowness and anonymity of online relationships, time spent online and exposure to violent and inappropriate images.
DC will be looking at future workshops to continue the conversation with parents. We hope to look for opportunities to build a partnership between home and school that makes the the social media experience safer and more positive for our community.
