Mother Tongue Groups beginning in Primary

Posted: October 28, 2016

At Discovery College, we firmly believe in supporting the Mother Tongue of our learners from different cultures and backgrounds. We wish to be able to celebrate the diversity of our community and also value the maintenance of Mother Tongue. At the Parent Information Fair earlier this year, we had a group of volunteers sign up to lead small Mother Tongue groups in Primary.

These groups currently include:

  • Cantonese
  • Putonghua
  • German
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • French

The purpose of these Mother Tongue groups is to give students the opportunity to connect with, play with, and converse with other children in the same Mother Tongue language through a range of activities and experiences. These are NOT language learning groups.

For this reason, it is essential that students must have a level of Mother Tongue fluency. We are in the stages of finalizing days and times for when we can offer these groups, that will happen either after school or during lunch times. A form will be coming home shortly from the school for parents to express their interest in enrolling their child in the relevant Mother Tongue group. If you feel you would be able to support leading a Mother Tongue group, either one already listed, or offer an additional one, could you please email Donna Ellery (VP/PYP Coordinator) directly at donna.ellery@dc.edu.hk.
