Congratulations to Rea Kim and Yun Jin Lee who recently won a prize for Outstanding Writing from the City University of Hong Kong. This is a great accolade and we would like to share this success with the community.
Literature and creative writing is a form of art, and is a way a person can express an idea. With the COVID-19 pandemic, for the past two years, it has been difficult to look at the bigger picture and appreciate things.
The City University of Hong Kong hosted a writing competition for creative writing, with the central theme being the COVID-19 pandemic. Both of us participated in the competition, submitting works attached below. The competition had a Creative Writing stream and a Personal Reflection Stream for students to show their creativity. The process of writing our stories was satisfying, as we each saw our thoughts and words come to life. We each received an Outstanding Writing Award for our stories and writing, which was not only a great reward for the effort we put into our works, but a wonderful way to consolidate our passion for writing.
Our stories surrounded the effects of COVID-19, with Yun Jin’s story being about the recovery of COVID-19 in 50 years, touching on the impact it has had on people’s lives, including the interactions between humans and emotions felt through challenging times. On the other hand, Rea’s personal reflection was about how the monotony of living in a pandemic can affect one’s mental health, but also how sometimes, simple, out-of-the-ordinary actions can have the biggest influences.
Writing can not only be an outlet to express yourself and your ideas, but also a method to showcase your dedication.
