Year 7 Induction Programme: Setting the Stage for Success

Posted: August 23, 2024

We are excited to introduce our Year 7 Induction Programme to the DC community, designed to ensure a smooth transition to middle school. This programme focuses on four key themes to support first-year MYP students in their academic and personal growth.

As part of the induction experience, students are immersed in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework, establishing an understanding of academic expectations and fostering a sense of community.

To support student well-being, purpose, learning, and connections, the programme introduces coping mechanisms for resilience and encourages viewing failures as growth opportunities. Students engage in collaborative design thinking projects to enhance problem-solving skills. They also develop assessment criteria — such as judging the best chocolate chip cookies — to familiarize themselves with the MYP framework. Furthermore, students explore the concept of community with their teachers and collaborate with an external artist to create art for their learning team, fostering inclusion and teamwork.

Having worked closely with our students, our Year 7 Dean, Ms. Sarah Barnett, observed how they formed meaningful connections and began building a supportive community.

A Note from the Year 7 Dean

Our Year 7 students are off to a great start this year! We spent the first two days of school learning about all things Secondary School. Students engaged in meaningful activities to build community and belonging through collaborative art. They learned about the MYP framework through chocolate chip cookies and built relationships and teamwork while problem-solving with office supplies. Our work together during this time helped to foster confidence during transitions and build relationships and connections in the Year 7 teaching and learning community.

We are confident that the Year 7 Induction Programme will equip your child with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive in their new school environment. We look forward to a fruitful year of learning and growth.
