At Discovery College, our vision statement, ‘Grow, Discover, Dream’, drives our joint commitment to creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Integral to this vision is one of our key outcomes and a core value: taking principled action that exemplifies respect, empathy, and compassion.
When students demonstrate behaviours that go against this value, we support them in building empathy and understanding about the impact of their choices. There have been instances in the past two weeks of individual students using discriminatory language. Whilst we are following up with individuals and their families we also wanted to connect with our parent community about this important issue.
We encourage you to discuss the impact of discriminatory language with your child, to reinforce the message of respecting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), which is central to our vision, mission and values. You may find this resource from Unicef helpful as a reference point: How parents can speak with their children about racism
We continue to review our education and policies in this area and will keep you updated on future developments as they occur.
Thank you for your support.
