Year 11 parents explore MYP Personal Project: A successful Workshop recap

Posted: September 6, 2024

Dear School Community,

We are pleased to share the successful completion of our recent workshop designed to help Year 11 parents explore the intricacies of the MYP Personal Project. The personal project is a student-driven, independent inquiry that takes place in the last year of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), where students select a topic of personal interest. They embark on a journey to learn new skills or knowledge and create a product or outcome that reflects their learning.

During the workshop, parents participated in brainstorming sessions where they explored various project scenarios. They worked on identifying the essential knowledge and skills needed as the learning goals for these projects. Parents also discussed how the identified knowledge and skills could be applied to achieve a product goal, ultimately leading to the creation of a final product. This exercise gave parents valuable insight into the early stages of the process that their children will undertake. Many parents acknowledged the complexity and depth of the task, noting the challenging nature of the project. At the same time, it is quite exciting for young adults to engage with a project of their own interest.

The workshop highlighted the importance of parental support and how it complements the guidance provided by supervisors. With this collaboration, our Year 11 students will be well-supported and effectively scaffolded to complete their independent, inquiry-based personal projects confidently. These projects will be marked externally by the IB to ensure the accurate application of the criteria, maintaining a consistent standard of evaluation.

We are confident that, with support from home and school, our students will achieve success in their personal projects, gaining valuable skills and insights along the way.

Warm regards,

Ms. Valerie Mao | MYP Personal Project Coordinator
