In recent discussions during our Digital Citizenship lessons on the worldwide hot topic of ‘should smartphone devices be banned to under 16’s (sale and used)’, we asked Year 6-10 students their thoughts and then also asked all parents to share their voice on the topic.
There is probably no surprise but the results revealed a significant divide in opinion between parents and students.
With 60.1% of parents supporting the ban and only 14.7% of students in favour, the contrasting views highlight the complexities of this issue.
Students’ Perspective
The overwhelming majority of students opposed the ban, indicating a strong desire for autonomy and access to technology. Smartphones are often seen as essential tools for communication, socialisation, and education. Many students argue that smartphones can enhance learning opportunities and provide a platform for social engagement, especially in a digital age where technology plays a crucial role in everyday life. Some went so far as to argue that it would be an infringement on their human rights if their smartphone was taken away.
Conclusion
The debate over whether smartphone devices should be banned for individuals under 16 is complex and multifaceted. While parents express significant concern for their children’s well-being, students advocate for their rights to access technology. As society continues to navigate the challenges posed by digital devices, it is essential to consider both perspectives and seek a balanced approach that prioritises the safety and development of young individuals while recognising the importance of technology in their lives. This is a conversation that we would urge you to have at home with your children. Ultimately it is parents’ decision as to whether they provide a smartphone to their children and they decide what age is appropriate for their child. At Discovery College our current policy surrounding ‘smartphones’ is that students may bring them to school but from 8.30am onwards mobile phones must remain in their school bag or lockers unless otherwise directed by a teacher. All staff work hard to ensure these expectations are upheld during lessons and also break times as the College prioritises face-to-face relationships and interactions.
