The International Baccalaureate places a great emphasis on action, encouraging students to develop new understandings and skills and use these to make a difference in the world. Through our school vision we ask our students to ’Dream. dare to make a difference for yourself, humanity and the planet’. Across the school year, you might see many examples of this occurring across all year levels.
Recently, a group of Year 5 students worked closely with one of our classroom teachers to begin to create awareness of childhood cancer (see poster below). Over the past six weeks they have worked hard to understand the impact this illness has on children around the world and look for ways in which they can make a difference to the lives of children with cancer.
To support the action of these students, Discovery College will be holding a ‘Crazy Hat Day’ on Friday 9 March. This event will be in support of International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, which was held in February. All students are encouraged to donate $10 and wear a crazy hat in order to show their support for childhood cancer. Caps and hats provide support and comfort to children experiencing hair loss. A team of students, staff and parents will be collecting donations on the day at the front of the school.
Across our community we have parents, grandparents, family members, friends or members of our student body who are living with or have beaten cancer. The Year 5 students, through their Media unit, are out to create awareness and highlight some important information for families about this illness and ways you can identify key signs at an early stage. A key part of this awareness has been the development of a presentation to be shared with students across primary and secondary. The focus of this presentation will be based around two key IB learner profiles being Courageous and Caring. Students will explore these concepts with their teachers over the week leading up to Crazy Hat Day.
Below we have also attached two key documents for parents to peruse, which highlight childhood cancer early warning signs. This website provides a wealth of information as well. The money raised from Crazy Hat Day will go towards the HK chapter of St. Baldrick’s, an organisation that supports cancer research.
We look forward to the DC community getting behind this great cause and wearing a crazy hat next Friday.
