I wanted to bring your attention to an excellent resource called Common Sense Media. Common Sense Media is a nonprofit organisation that has a vision of Families taking charge of their digital choices.
The website provides an amazing database of various types of media from movies to TV shows to games. They provide research-informed information that can help you make informed choices around what you as a family choose to share with your children.
As you may be aware, a new series recently came out on Netflix called Squid Games. We have had a few occasions of children in upper primary playing games like those played in Squid Games on the playground as well as kids talking about having watched it at home.
If you are unaware of the show and your child is mentioning it or watching it, we would recommend looking closely at the review and having conversations at home around your own media guidelines.
Additionally, I think it is important to point out that Netflix does have parental controls that can help filter content if you so choose.
This write-up is just an alert; I am by no means trying to control what is being viewed at home–that is completely at your discretion. I just wanted to bring it to your attention as it has been popping up in play and in conversation.
The more we know, the more informed choices we can make.
Kind regards,
Josh Blue
