Bridging Understanding: Insights from the MYP Parent Workshop on Assessment

Posted: October 4, 2024

On 2 October, more than 50 enthusiastic parents gathered for our MYP Parent Workshop on Assessment, keen to discover the “Why” and “How” of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). During this collaborative session, we explained how students’ grades are determined through the assessment process and criteria.

Understanding the Purpose
The discussion highlighted the purpose of MYP assessments, which go beyond mere academic checkpoints. Assessments are designed to monitor progress, check understanding, and foster confidence and motivation among students. They help develop fundamental life skills such as time management and critical thinking, preparing students for real-life situations. Moreover, understanding MYP criteria and expectations equips both students and parents to better navigate the academic journey.

Interactive Learning Experience
Parents were actively taking part in practicing grading reports with the MYP assessment criteria achievement descriptors. This hands-on experience clarified the distinctions between command terms like “outline,” “describe,” “explain,” “analyze,” and “justify.” Parents learned how these varying levels of thinking challenge students to demonstrate critical reasoning.

Resources and Support
To further assist parents, an MYP Assessment Q&A document was distributed, addressing frequently asked questions. The purpose of this resource is to provide parents with a better understanding of the assessment process and to help them ensure their children’s academic success throughout the MYP.

To help parents compare MYP levels, two student work samples are included along with official IB examiner markschemes. These samples illustrate the differences in student work at various achievement levels, providing practical insights into assessment standards.

Thank you to all parents who participated, as taking time off work is not always easy. Your engagement is key in fostering a supportive learning environment for our students. We look forward to continued collaboration to enhance educational outcomes.
